- Sterling hit a two-week high against a tumbling dollar on Monday, after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy in the U.S.
- Markets were further rattled by the news that major U.S. insurer AIG is seeking help from the Federal Reserve. There is now a high probability that U.S. rates will be cut on Tuesday.

- Sterling hovered near 10-day lows against the dollar on Tuesday, with further falls seen as Britain struggles with a banking and housing sector crisis and a weak economy.
- Britain is seen just as exposed as the United States, as markets tumble from U.S. lawmakers’ shock rejection of a $700 billion rescue plan for the financial industry.
