Sterling hit a two-week high against a tumbling dollar on Monday, after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy in the U.S.

Markets were further rattled by the news that major U.S. insurer AIG is seeking help from the Federal Reserve. There is now a high probability that U.S. rates will be cut on Tuesday.
